Huseyn JalilBarzakh (2026)
In his latest works on paper, Huseyn Jalil examines the material possibilities of Persian calligraphy traditions. Working with pigments associated with calligraphy and watercolor, he explores how pigment and gesture can produce form, mass, and shifts in perception. The calligraphic gesture remains central to the works, treated as a material element, as Jalil returns to the same gestures repeatedly, allowing marks to accumulate across the surface. Differences in scale and density emerge through this process, with each mark affecting the relationships that follow. Over time, these accumulated gestures begin to organize the image, allowing form to develop through the interaction of repetition, pigment, and space. This approach reflects Jalil’s broader interest in how form emerges through processes of organization. As in his sculptural practice, where repeated local interactions gradually produce coherent structures, the works on paper develop through accumulation and adjustment.
