Guzel ZakirovaHair Louder Than Voice (2023)

‘Hair Louder Than Voice’ presents four closely seated female figures contained within an unprimed linen surface. Their repeated gestures, positioning, and facial features create a deliberately collective image. Rendered entirely in red, the figures correspond to Zakirova’s recurring “Red Woman” motif, through which the artist examines Uyghur identity. Each woman has almond-shaped eyes directed away from the viewer and toward different points outside the pictorial field, a characteristic gesture in Zakirova’s representation of women. A continuous unibrow connects the figures visually and references a childhood practice shared by the artist and her sisters, when their mother used usma to draw a unibrow across their brows. In Zakirova’s practice, this motif has become a marker of connection to her cultural roots. Long black hair extends past the lower edge of the linen, functioning as a symbol of intergenerational care, intimacy, and collective memory. The figures’ bodies are deliberately non-sexualized. Several hold pialas, traditional Central Asian drinking bowls, while their hands reach beyond the frame. This gesture invokes traditions of hospitality, care, and the transmission of cultural knowledge across generations through everyday practices.
