Javid Ilham Divine Game (2025)
framed: 80h × 100w cm
Oil on canvas

Taking the central position in 'Divine Game', a solitary figure stands behind a table where two toy characters appear mid-motion. Their gestures suggest a light, joyful dance, but through their expressions one reads a note of artificiality, as if their movements were bound to a pre-set sequence. The figure’s features follow a familiar structure within Ilham’s visual language: enlarged, attentive eyes and a controlled, neutral look. No sharp contrasts separate his body from attire; skin, clothing, and hands are pictured within a narrow tonal register, shifting through muted gradations of grey. In his hands, he holds toy bricks. The choreography, active moments earlier, now appears suspended. The scene settles at a point of adjustment: the configuration is in flux, its outcome not yet determined. The background adopts the toys’ palette in saturated fields of red, yellow, green, and blue, setting up a chromatic contrast with the figure’s muted presence, sharpening the separation between the agent of control and his field of play.
