Ceramic with custom glaze
framed: 38h × 37w cm

Huseyn Jalil's latest sculptural series, ‘Polytypes’, investigates how form emerges through processes of material organization. Working at the intersection of art and science, Jalil draws on principles shared across crystallographic growth, mineral accretion and biological morphogenesis to examine how matter acquires the structural coherence required for new forms to exist. The sculptures are generated through a recursive process in which gravity, compression, repetition, load distribution and material resistance continuously reorganize one another. Complexity develops through accumulation, dependency and adjustment until the architecture becomes self-supporting. Each sculpture preserves the history of its own development and is identified as an individual polytype through an internal taxonomic classification, with its alphanumeric designation functioning as an index rather than a title. At its core, ‘Polytypes’ considers sculpture as a means of investigating how matter organizes itself across different systems, scales and conditions.
